Take a Kid Fishing

For those of you looking for a great place to take a kid fishing near Hood River or Portland, check out Laurance Lake.  The lake sits in the shadow of Mt. Hood and is only a short drive from Parkdale, Oregon... Easy striking distance from the PDX metro.  A non-motorized boat will make life easier for you although there is good bank access near the dam.  There's a great camp area if you want to make a weekend of it.  Expect to see other folks, especially on Saturday night.  However, the camp host does a great job keeping the peace.  You can have some great dry fly fishing in the mornings and evenings but trolling or stripping olive or black wooly buggers will put some huge numbers up!  Stop in at the Gorge Fly Shop (Hood River) or The Fly Fishing Shop (Welches) and they'll make sure you have the right bugs.

Beginner Fly Fishing Clinics

He's right there...

Larimer Outfitters introduced our Intro to Fly Fishing Clinics this season.  So far, they've been extremely popular.  Our goal was to give new anglers a solid introduction to fly fishing at an affordable price.  Each four hour clinic is limited to only two anglers.  We cover gear, basic casting, entomology, reading the water and presentation.  Our trout clinics are held on the Deschutes River and our steelhead clinics will be done on the Hood River.  At only $99.00 per angler, it's a great way to start your fly fishing education.

Every once in a while the stars align in winter steelheading and you're rewarded for all the tough days you spent faithfully swinging your fly through the void.  It takes conviction, the right conditions and yes, a little luck.  When it does happen, there's no other high like it in fly fishing.
